I've found just a couple so far, but they can be a real pain if you don't know where they are, so!

1. Abandoned Tunnels: directly east of DragonClaw Mountains

2. Bloodhawk Falls: south of Maryk's Altar, it's the SECOND southeast

Point of clarification -- Most (all?) of these walks start from Tolin Questmaster - Kayla.

If you are starting from the recall point (the fountain), then remove the initial N;NE or N;NW.
Fifteen years.

That is not an insignificant amount of time. A lot of hours have gone into building, coding, paying the bills, reading the notes, developing characters and watching stories play out - from imm to player and back again. We still have a handful of players such as Daklore or Sephrenia who were on our prior MUD, Realm of the Crystal Dragon (RCD). It was a fun game that was made better by the players who occupied it. When things started to fall apart around the owners of the game, Tear and Volo, my wife and I realized that we had simply outgrown RCD. We had our own ideas we wanted to implement. We wanted to treat players in a different way. Some of those things we got right almost immediately, many of them we didn't, but we were willing to learn and adapt as needed.

Of course things were never perfect - and really no game is. Everyone wants different things from their gaming experience, and I learned a long time ago that there was never making everyone happy, but all in all I have been quite happy with what we produced over the years. Over a hundred areas, tons of original code and some pretty memorable characters and stories over the years - some I participated in, many I just sat back, grabbed some popcorn so to speak, and watched them evolve.

Lots of things have changed since we first started. The people on the staff. The players playing the game. Races, religions, Armengar - it was always an interesting balance of wanting to create more and new content while going back on to improve the existing stuff. If we were working from the ground up once again, I imagine we would do things quite a bit differently (the number of Scattered Ashes conversations Thalia and I have had over the years are numerous). Heck, we nearly went in a completely different direction back when Farnite was looking at making a PvP heavy MUD based on Godwars code set in the time of the Dragon-Kalchi War.

Fifteen years. For some perspective - my oldest kid is 19. My son is 16. My youngest? Yup, she's 13. The MUD is older than one of my teenage kids.

My hope this upcoming weekend is to get some advertisement out there in a few players to announce the 15 years, maybe rope in some new players and maybe as a result we will see some things pick up. Of course there are multiple reasons why new players stick it out or leave. Some if it is the writing in the newbie zone - or even color combinations (one player many years ago logged out after about five rooms and cussed me out on open channels for giving them a headache because it looked like someone threw up Skittles all over our MUD). Everyone's different - you can't make 'em all happy - but I much prefer when people are in fact happy and enjoying their time here. The biggest reason why a player is likely to stay or go is their interactions with other players.

MUDs are a social experience - so treat each other well. We don't all always get along, and that's fine - but how it gets handled is important as well. I think the game tends to make a good impression on new players more often than not, but existing players and staff (myself absolutely included) play a part in keeping them coming back. I don't imagine we'll ever see those 50+ a night player lists (unless I cheat again like I did a couple of years ago and log in every one of mine and Gillian's 100ish characters), but we can enjoy the people we do have when they have the time to play.

I can honestly say that fifteen years of running Kingdoms of the Lost has been a great overall experience for me. I don't personally have the time to sink four, six, nine hours a day into building, coding and socializing on the site, but it has been a near-daily part of my life for a decade and a half now. I have met a lot of really nice, interesting people. I have learned how to code (badly I might add - thank you for fixing it all, Thalia!). I had a chance to spend a lot of time writing my own stories and reading those of others. I am definitely not the same guy I was at 24 years old when Gilly and I decided it was time to try and make our own MUD, but I am undoubtedly better for the experience.

Thank you to all of you. Kingdoms of the Lost is the sum of its parts - the people who play it, those who help to build it, individuals who code it. I look forward to seeing you around!

Ideas & Brainstorming / Library idea
« Last post by nuk on 07/06/15, 19:38 »
I shot this out briefly a couple times but here it is.

So I think its pretty well known that there is a few people on this mud you ask things from and some people who you ask and hope they don't feel frisky. Exploring the mud is a great way to find out secrets and tricks and making friends you can expand the knowledge pool and gain great insight.

My proposal is a library located off one of the towns , Calararian or tolin make good areas to branch the zone off from. Inside this area would be many bookshelves with books you could pull out and inside of these would contain information maps with visual indications of where they were. (combined with area full you would always know where to go) There could be equipment logs written by mages of gear and the stats it contains. WANT fire resist? get Book of Elemental Defense bookshelf. read elemental.

I wonder if the books could be made to not be put in bags the zone not able to be recalled or gated from and the books now allowed to leave the zone , if they were dropped the librarians would put them back in the bookshelf and they were not able to be sacced.

could even add a shady figure who appears randomly and sells journals and books for different prices of tokens (smal and large depending on secret) stuff like directions through bignars and gdi . how to become a dracolich. vampire sitings so on and so forth

once again i am down for putting work in , any thoughts?
Note: This is implemented.

Because Thalia rocks. :)
If so, that might be an interesting idea - just one that could take some time to string together, but some extra hands on it would certainly expedite the process from the OLC side of the house.
LOTS that could be replied to here in these posts, and while I like some of the ideas better than others, this response gave me pause:

Non Bloodsworn should be amped up, increased group range, remove bad mods, etc..

Bloodsworn should be amped up, Way better rewards that favor pvp specific aspects.  maybe offer Arena gear that you can only wear in the arena?  Plus X stat or adds a skill, maybe a pseudo maxed pre legendary but only viable in arenas although they talk to you outside arenas even though they wouldn't work.
(maybe they are only active when you are bloodsworn with X bloodpoints) wouldn't be something, or maybe someone with the most bloodpoints have their items active etc, a lot of options here.

Player wipe:

I'm not hugely in favor of this. Why wipe out peoples' time and effort? if it's for the sake of 'starting fresh' - you can create a new player to do so. I am hesitant here because I have had several of our current players tell me in the past that if we ever did another pwipe, they wouldn't come back. Heck, we never really fully recovered from our last one that cost us more than 30 people a night. Not sure what we gain here except to tell people they are all starting from ground zero, so the more competitive people have a reason to... well, compete against one another, but it doesn't really *gain* us anything either, and it hurts the players who aren't interested in being alpha dogs or the first ones to do something.

Remove Perfection:

Or just make religion skills available to everyone in a religion and they can 'purchase' them? Of course, I've had a storyline/notion about blowing up the existing deities altogether at times and trying to do something different w/ the religions... I just haven't fully formed that notion in my head yet and wind up thinking about Ashes instead. :/

Heal all movement, rub for blindness (outside of combat. if you're in combat, tough luck): pretty sure we talked about doing these in the past, just hasn't happened yet, but not bad ideas.

Refer a friend/daily login bonuses/etc:

I like both. We even tried refer a friend in the past. Toughest part is coming up w/ legit accounts. When a game like WoW does it, the parties benefit when the referred account pays for the game/a month of service, and their account is then tied to a credit card. It's easier to verify that it is a unique account.

I am one of those guys who logs into several games daily just to make sure I get my daily bonuses (M&M Duel of Champions freebies, Rested exp bonus on WoW, daily gifts on Puzzle & Dragons). This might help address the earlier issue of accruing tokens and goodies more quickly as well that was brought up earlier.

Just some random thoughts on this thread that I've been bouncing around for a while.

Those two things feel at odds with one another. If we are going to pump up Bloodsworn even further, doesn't that get us back into the situation where players feel 'forced' to be in Bloodsworn again? I feel like it makes more sense to make Bloodsworn and non be closer to one another in what they offer, and Bloodsworn can just be for those who want to PK a little (or a lot).

Other quick thoughts:

Auto quests giving more tokens - so we're once again looking at expediting the max gear process? I'm just curious as we have created a new way to get gear quicker earlier on. Instead of just outright offering 5 times the tokens, maybe ways to make it more interesting? A counter that keeps track of how many quests you have done so the first time it's times 1, second is times 2, third is times 3, up to a times 5 and then cycles back when you a) log off b) do a quest for another city c) resign a quest - maybe something like that?

Ideas & Brainstorming / Re: random load
« Last post by Chalgyr on 06/24/15, 10:52 »
That's sort of what I'm wondering here as well - a new system has a LOT of overhead to it. While I like the system idea (and would still support doing it for a clean install on a new game like Ashes), I'm not sure if it makes more sense to do that here, or to go back through and figure out if existing content shouldn't be upgraded (or do we do a cheap, super easy fix that says if gear is non-runic increase effective ac/hit/dam behind the scenes? That's lines of code that might save hours of work if what we're saying is the non-runic gear in the game is underachieving).

And I do think the gem system could use... I dunno. Something. The idea was interesting, gems chipping down to fit slots and losing stats and... stuff. But it feels like maybe there could be ways to improve/streamline the system (paying an NPC to 'polish' the gems instead of chipping them to fit, or augmenting the gems in some way to fit into larger spots, or just doing away with that part of the system, etc). I think gems actually could do more to make equipment unique than the random loot tables, but it's still untapped potential.
