What is “Makyo?” Why “Makyo?”

Quote from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makyō

In Zen, Makyō is a figurative reference to the kind of self-delusion that results from clinging to experience. Makyō used in a broad sense refers to people’s attachments to experiences in their everyday lives.

I think of Makyo more broadly — not exclusive to religion and mediation. So often, people cling to “scientific knowledge” or “political beliefs” so tightly that they can’t see contrary evidence, that they can’t understand contrary viewpoints.

Long, long ago I claimed “Makyo” as a reminder to hold lightly to beliefs, to remain flexible and open, to beware of people who are stuck in Makyo.
